If you’ve been trying to find an affordable and efficient compact car to buy but you also enjoy the look and utility of an SUV, a new segment has recently emerged: the subcompact crossover! Enter the 2017 Mazda CX-3 and the 2018 Toyota C-HR. While both of these models feature similar profiles, some close research reveals how the Mazda crossover beats out not only popular competitors like the Honda HR-V and the Nissan Juke but also the recently-debuted C-HR. Vernon and South Windsor drivers can get all the details here!

Performance Capabilities

The performance of the Mazda CX-3 starts with the standard 2.0L SKYACTIV®-G inline-four engine that produces a balanced 146 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, which can be sent to a standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive system via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Toyota C-HR also comes with a standard 2.0L four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission, but this powertrain only makes 144 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the Toyota C-HR can only be equipped with front-wheel drive, which means less available traction in inclement conditions.

Fuel Economy

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 utilizes Mazda’s comprehensive approach to performance and fuel economy, SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, in order to achieve up to an EPA-estimated 34 mpg highway and 29 mpg city with front-wheel drive and 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg city with all-wheel drive. Compare that to the 2018 Toyota C-HR, which only gets an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway and 27 mpg city with its front-wheel drive system. Thus, if you’re looking for greater savings at the pump, the Mazda CX-3 has you covered.

Price

Not only will you save more on fuel over time with the new Mazda CX-3, but despite its many other advantages, the Mazda CX-3 is also the more accessibly priced of the two models:

  • Mazda CX-3 – MSRP from $19,960
  • Toyota C-HR – MSRP from $22,500
