The 2016 Mazda CX-9 vs. The 2017 Toyota Highlander
2016 Mazda CX-9
2017 Toyota Highlander
For large families throughout East Hartford and Glastonbury, there’s nothing quite like a large three-row crossover SUV to get the job done. The 2016 Mazda CX-9 has been fully redesigned, bringing a lot of attention to this capable and well-equipped crossover SUV. The 2017 Toyota Highlander has also gotten plenty of attention, but, in several critical areas, it doesn’t meet the high standard set by the all-new Mazda CX-9. See which model is best suited for your family, and test drive the new Mazda CX-9 at Mazda of Manchester.
If you’re looking for a three-row crossover SUV with more standard power, the Mazda CX-9 has you covered:
- Mazda CX-9 – Every Mazda CX-9 is powered by a 2.5L inline-four engine that produces an output of up to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
- Toyota Highlander – The base engine on the Highlander is also a 2.5L four-cylinder, but it only manages to produce 185 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. While the Highlander also makes available a 3.5L V6 engine (for a greater cost, of course), this engine is still only able to create 263 lb-ft of torque.
On top of its superior standard power and greater available torque, the Mazda CX-9 is also more fuel-efficient than the Toyota Highlander:
- Mazda CX-9 – The Mazda CX-9 uses SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY to optimize power and fuel economy, helping it get up to an EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway and 22 mpg city with its standard four-cylinder powertrain.
- Toyota Highlander – When equipped with the base four-cylinder engine, the Highlander only gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg city. Even its more powerful V6 engine tops out at an EPA-estimated 27 mpg highway and 21 mpg city, still falling short of the mark set by the Mazda CX-9.
The Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Highlander have both been equipped with much of the same standard equipment, including 18-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera display, cruise control, Bluetooth®, cruise control, and a six-speaker stereo system. Unlike the Highlander, though, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 comes standard with added luxuries like tri-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and HD Radio. Also, Mazda’s crossover comes with a 7-inch multimedia display which ultimately eclipses the Highlander’s 6.1-inch screen.
