The 2016 CX-9 Receives an Updated Design and a Powerful Turbocharged Engine
Mazda’s midsize SUV, the CX-9, is the last of the current lineup to fully transition to SKYACTIV engineering and technology. When comparing the differences between the 2016 Mazda CX-9 and 2015 Mazda CX-9, SKYACTIV influence on the all-new model can be found throughout the vehicle, from a reduction in weight to improved engine power and efficiency.
2016 CX-9 vs 2015 CX-9 Engine Specs
For the 2016 model year, all Mazda models come with some variation of the SKYACTIV engine, known for producing more low- to mid-range torque with greater fuel efficiency. The 2016 Mazda CX-9, however, is the first to feature Mazda’s turbocharged variant of the SKYACTIV engine, which offers more torque than the V6 engine found in the 2015 CX-9. Combined with a weight reduction of 198 lbs. (287 lbs. with i-ACTIV AWD), the CX-9 should deliver plenty of power to meet your driving needs. Here’s how the figures compare:
2016 Mazda CX-9
Horsepower: Up to 250 hp
Torque: Up to 310 lb.-ft.
2015 Mazda CX-9
Horsepower: Up to 273 hp
Torque: Up to 270 lb.-ft.
2016 CX-9 vs 2015 CX-9 Fuel Economy
Though official EPA estimates for the 2016 CX-9’s fuel economy have yet to be revealed, Mazda estimates a roughly 20 percent increase in fuel efficiency over the 2015 model. We’ll be sure to keep you updated once the official numbers are released, but just for fun, we’ve done the math to get some idea of just how efficient the 2016 model will be. With the 2015 CX-9 being capable of up to 17 city and 24 highway mpg, a 20 percent increase would mean the 2016 CX-9 is capable of roughly 20 city and 28 highway mpg by conservative estimates.
2016 Mazda CX-9 Design Changes
Of course, other significant changes to the CX-9 for the 2016 model year include design changes that better incorporate Mazda’s award-winning KODO-Soul of Motion design DNA. We’ll let the photos do most of the talking here. Keep in mind, however, that although the 2016 model is shorter, the wheelbase is wider to benefit passenger leg room. In addition, the 2016 CX-9 will be available in the latest signature paint color from Mazda, Machine Gray.
