Where is Mazda From?

What country is Mazda from? The Mazda Motor Corporation—originally named Toyo Cork Kogyo—is based in Fuchu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. But to truly understand where Mazda is made and how they’ve become one of the world’s premier automakers, it’s best to go back to the start of the company in 1920. Only then can you appreciate the creation of the company’s rotary engine technology and the evolution to the latest SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY. Once you’ve learned where Mazda is from, learn more about new Mazda models with us at Mazda of Manchester today!

Who Owns Mazda: The Mazda Motor Corporation History

When the Mazda Motor Corporation was founded in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920, the company’s specialty was “Autorickshaws.” These three-wheeled motorcycles were the star of Mazda-sponsored events in the 1930s, which subsequently caused the company’s popularity to skyrocket. In short, Mazda became a household name, and by the 1940s, Mazda started to design compact cars, trucks, and more three-wheeled vehicles. In 1960, the company introduced the Mazda R360, a tiny, two-door car.

Mazda Develops the Rotary Engine

In the early 1960s, Mazda focused on the development of the German-designed Wankel rotary engine to differentiate the vehicles they were making from other Japanese automobiles. While most vehicles on the road used a reciprocating piston engine—in which pistons rapidly change directions by 180 degrees—all parts rotate in one fluid direction in a rotary engine. Powerful and lightweight compared to piston engines, rotary engine-equipped Mazda cars started to become popular overseas in the 1970s, especially with models like the Mazda R100.

Revolutionary Mazda SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY

Starting in 2011, Mazda once again pushed automobile engineering forward with the company’s latest engine tech: SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY. Found in newer Mazda3 and Mazda6 models, SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY-equipped vehicles are some of the most powerful and fuel-efficient on Hartford roads. Needless to say, the competition is having a difficult time keeping up.

Where Are Mazda Cars Currently Made?

Who makes Mazda cars and SUVs? Unlike many other foreign car companies, Mazda has kept most of the company’s car production in its home company of Japan. Wondering where your Mazda6 or Mazda CX-3 was made? Mazda makes most of its vehicles at one of three plants in Japan, two in Hiroshima and one in Yamaguchi. With that said, Mazda does have one plant that makes Mazda3 sedans in Salamanca, Mexico for the North American market, and is currently constructing another plant in Huntsville, Alabama. The Mazda plant in the U.S. should be operational by 2021!
